Chelsea Loan Ian Maatsen to Borussia Dortmund

Young Dutch Left-Back Stays in Bundesliga for Remainder of Season

Extended Chelsea Contract Signed to 2026

Chelsea full-back Ian Maatsen has joined Bundesliga club Borussia Dortmund on loan until the end of the season, with the 22-year-old signing a contract extension with his parent club until 2026.

Maatsen, who joined Chelsea's academy in 2018, has made just three appearances for the first team this season, starting only once in the EFL Cup. In order to get more playing time, he has now been sent on loan to Borussia Dortmund, where he has already started in all 18 of his appearances.

Maatsen is a versatile defender who can play at left-back or in central defense. He is a product of the Netherlands youth system and has represented his country at various youth levels.

Chelsea manager Graham Potter has said that he is happy with Maatsen's progress and believes that the loan move to Borussia Dortmund will be beneficial for his development.

"Ian is a young player with a lot of potential," Potter said. "He has shown his quality in training and in the few games he has played for us. This loan move will give him the opportunity to play regularly at a high level and continue his development."
